Condition Monitoring made easy – How “descriptors” condense complex information into a single scalar value
Online CM approaches - such as our VCM-3 - are increasingly becoming a cost-effective monitoring alternative for non-critical and “Balance of Plant (BoP) machinery. Inside the VCM-3 descriptors are derived out of raw time waveform data measured by connected vibration sensors. Other “descriptors” such as process data (temperature or pressure, etc.) can be supplied as input to the VCM-3 from external systems for building advanced descriptors.

To demystify the fog around “descriptors” Peter will give an all-round introduction and overview about:

- what descriptors are and how to derive them systematically from the physical asset to be monitored
- Advantages and key benefits… “born to be trended”
- “the mother of descriptors” – our VCM-3

To demonstrate how descriptors can unleash their full potential we will show an example from B&K Vibro’s unique success in wind turbine remote monitoring – 15+ years experience in monitoring 1000+ units. The Foundation is a special, unique ”descriptor” based on Oil debris monitoring ODM (wear particles decontaminating the lubrication oil).

Peter has been at the forefront of Balance of plant applications and instrument technologies for the past 11 years, has studied this topic extensively, and was awarded a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering for his thesis “Robust Control Concepts applied to flexible mechanical structures“.
